MINNEAPOLIS — Nikola Jokic is breaking the game. The Cleveland Outlaws star just earned his fourth consecutive COMO MVP award, topping former Shorewood teammate Giannis Antetkounmpo's shared record of three straight (2018-2020). Those two were, naturally, the primary focus of All-COMO voting this week, as they were among five players receiving unanimous support for first-team inclusion. The others in the "100" club: Hamburg (via Cream City) star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Scranton's Anthony Davis, and Paisley Park's Luka Doncic.

While three consecutive COMO MVPs is undeniably impressive, the basketball world is a little bit *over* the Nikola Jokic awards conversation (and Jokic is, too). So, let's focus on some first-timers. On Thursday afternoon, Cream City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Scranton forward Jayson Tatum were both named first-team All-COMO for the first time (it's their first appearance on any of the All-COMO teams). They were joined by mainstays Luka Doncic (fourth time on the first team), Giannis Antetokounmpo (seventh), Joel Embiid (fourth), and, of course, Jokic (third). Chaska's Paolo Banchero won Rookie of the Year, while Scranton GM Sam Twetan took home the Executive of the Year award for the first time. Other notes: LeBron James and James Harden both made the second team. They're the only players to make an All-COMO team every single season in the 10-year history of the league. Anthony Davis also earned a second-team nod, the ninth All-COMO selection of his career. The third team featured a trio of first-timers: Anthony Edwards, Lauri Markkanen, and Julius Randle. Ja Morant snuck past Pascal Siakim for the final spot. 2022-2023 All-COMO selectionsFirst Team

Giannis Antetokounmpo wins third straight COMO MVP; Morant, Halleron collect league honors8/13/2020 Re-printed with permission from the Sun Sailor.
SHOREWOOD, Minn. — Before Thursday, it had been 34 years since major pro basketball produced a back-to-back-to-back MVP. It's fitting then, that a man whose range of skills is unmatched in the history of the game, would be the first since Larry Bird in 1986 to collect his third straight Most Valuable Player trophy. Giannis Antetokounmpo already has his gold jacket tailored. He's been part of three Shorewood Show championship teams—including last year's COMO Finals MVP performance—and now has completed a trilogy of the highest individual honor in the league. His former Show teammate, Stephen Curry, has won two in his career. So has Anthony Davis. But for the third straight year, the Greek Freak outlasted perennial runner-up James Harden (fourth in voting in 2018, second in 2019 and 2020) to capture the prize. (It's worth noting that Harden will get the last laugh this year; his Sunnyvale Slayers hold a commanding COMO Finals lead, and he just poured in 61 bones against the Chaska Moose.) The award was voted on in March, before the COVID-19 pandemic halted the COMO playoffs. Antetokounmpo posted a 36.8-bone average over 48 regular season starts. Here are the voting results (each team's ballot listed players 1-5, with the first choice receiving 5 points, second choice receiving 4 points, etc.)
Antetokounmpo was also the only player to receive unanimous first-team All-COMO honors earlier this week. Morant takes home Rookie of the Year Round 1 of Zion vs. Ja went to the latter, as St. Louis point guard Ja Morant earned COMO Rookie of the Year honors over Chaska's Zion Williamson. Morant averaged 19.1 bones over 45 starts for the hapless Hornets (16-66), who finished last place in the North Star conference. The two 2019 draft picks were the subject of controversy last year when St. Louis general manager Aaron Connolly Nutting accused the commissioner of doctoring the lottery process. Chaska won the No. 1 pick—eventually Williamson—while Nutting claimed, "Zion was taken from me!" The oft-rested Williamson and his Moose advanced all the way to the COMO Finals this season. For now, though, Morant's trophy case is a little larger. Paisley Park's Halleron gets special nod For the first time, the league's general managers voted on Executive of the Year. It was a tight race, but the award went to longtime Paisley Park GM Brendan Halleron. The embattled exec has made some risky moves in recent years—including handing Anthony Davis a gigantic multi-year contract (good), wheeling and dealing for Ben Simmons (great) and tossing a ton of money at DeMarcus Cousins (very bad)—and it paid off in 2019-2020. The Rainmakers finished 58-24, tied for first place in the North Star. An early playoff exit soured the season a bit, but it was still the most successful squad in team history. Here were the full results for EOY (teams listed just one nomination each):
SHOREWOOD, Minn. — The Shorewood Show recently finished the most impressive regular season in professional basketball history. And while a 77-5 record doesn't guarantee much in the playoffs, it does guarantee plenty of love on the awards circuit. Do-it-all star Giannis Antetokounmpo was named COMO MVP on Thursday morning after recording 34.67 bones over 53 starts. The race for MVP was tight, but Newport Beach's LeBron James and Minnesnowta's Anthony Davis split too many top votes for one of them to steal the Greek Freak's crown. Shorewood guard/forward Ben Simmons was named COMO Rookie of the Year and also earned a second-team All-COMO nod. Two-time Finals MVP Stephen Curry joined Simmons on the second team, while teammate Nikola Jokic narrowly missed the cut. Here's a recap of the awards handed out Thursday: COMO MVP

Minnesnowta's Anthony Davis wins second COMO MVP; James Harden, Greek Freak headline All-COMO picks2/23/2017 NASHVILLE — Anthony Davis is COMO MVP for the second time his career. The Minnesnowta 7-footer was a near-unanimous choice for the league's top individual award after averaging 35.06 bones for the 61-win Chill. He collected 10 first-place votes and 2 second-place votes to blow out his competition with 34 "points"; Newport Beach's James Harden (15 points) and Russell Westbrook (14) were distant runners-up. Davis was a unanimous first-team All-COMO selection alongside Harden and Shorewood's Giannis "Greek Freak" Antetokounmpo. They were joined by Westbrook, Duval United's Kevin Durant and Newport Beach's LeBron James. It's the fourth consecutive first-team nod for Davis, Harden and James; Antetokounmpo is the only first-time member of the first team. Minneapolis' Karl-Anthony Towns and Chaska's DeMarcus Cousins nearly ousted James for the final first-team spot. They headline a second team that also features a quartet of St. Louis players: John Wall, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard and Hassan Whiteside. THROWBACK THURSDAY: Minnesnowta, Hollywood swap Davis, Whiteside in blockbuster deal Newport Beach's Joel Embiid (23.94 bones over 31 starts) was the default selection for Rookie of the Year after dominating the field throughout the season. HOLLYWOOD -- The 2014-2015 season was full of injuries and doubts after Anthony Davis tore COMO a new one in November. But he appears to be back in full form now.
The Hornets big man only started 47 regular season games in Hollywood, but his crazy production (34.28 average) allowed him to easily outrun all other MVP challengers. It doesn't appear as if he'll slow up at all during the playoffs, either. He just posted a 53-bone night to open the postseason on Monday. Here are the final MVP voting results: 1. Anthony Davis, Hollywood 2. James Harden, Colorado 3. Stephen Curry, Shorewood 4. Pau Gasol, Shorewood 5. Chris Paul, Hollywood 6. DeAndre Jordan, Duval United 7. LeBron James, Minneapolis/Shorewood 8. DeMarcus Cousins, Chaska 9. Marc Gasol, Kansas City 10. LaMarcus Aldridge, Shorewood The All-COMO teams will be announced tomorrow (Wednesday). JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You're probably not surprised.
Duval United small forward Kevin Durant has dominated COMO since the Brigade signed him for $50 million in the offseason auction. Kevin Love and LeBron James had excellent seasons, too, but in the end, they weren't really close to matching Durant's 34.08 average over 63 starts. Nobody else had the crunch-time instinct that would kick in on Sunday nights when the Brigade needed a standings bump. Durant would routinely go over 40 bones on the final day of the week. "None of those things will matter if Kevin doesn't keep up his stellar play in the postseason," Duval United general manager Matthew Fairburn said. But Durant has also been dominant through the first week of the playoffs (although that did not factor into the voting for this award). He's collected 130 bones through three starts for a 43.33 average. If Duval wins a championship, it will be Durant who carries them to the crown. "Kevin has to understand that we don't have any other players," Fairburn said. "This is his show. And your tape is your resume, FYI." Here are the final results of the 2013-2014 COMO MVP voting: 1. Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City), SF, Duval United — 34.08 / 63 starts 2. Kevin Love (Minnesota), PF/C, Chaska — 32.47 / 59 starts 3. LeBron James (Miami), SF/PF, Minneapolis — 30.95 / 62 starts 4. Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers), PF, Minneapolis — 27.63 / 68 starts 5. Anthony Davis (New Orleans), PF/C, Hollywood — 32.70 / 40 starts 6. DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento), PF/C, Chaska — 27.79 / 56 starts 7. Carmelo Anthony (New York), SF/PF, Minnesnowta — 27.33 / 58 starts 8. LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland), PF/C, Shorewood — 26.87 / 60 starts 9. Stephen Curry (Golden State), PG/SG, Newport Beach/Shorewood — 26.03 / 64 starts 10. Andre Drummond (Detroit), PF/C, Rio — 25.64 / 64 starts |
