HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Finally, some good news for Hornets fans: Chris Paul picked up his second COMO Player of the Week award on Sunday night.
Too bad the team has dropped from first place to eighth since owner Curt Clauss ceased to be involved with basketball operations. The move left absolutely no one in charge of a promising team that quickly derailed. When reached Sunday evening, Clauss called his star point guard "Cliff Paul" before announcing the veteran demanded a trade. "Hornets ownership refuses to comment," Clauss said. There is still time left in the regular season (10 weeks) to turn the squad around, especially if star sophomore Anthony Davis is activated from the injured reserve. A playoff run is still possible, but change needs to start at the executive level.

CHASKA, Minn. — What is Love?
The clear-cut favorite for 2013-2014 COMO MVP, that's what. Chaska's offensive powerhouse continued an impressive run of dominance on Sunday night, when he racked up 58 bones to lead the Moose to its second straight No. 1 finish. Chaska (44 standings points) is now tied with Minnesnowta for the league's top spot with 11 weeks to play in the regular season. "The thing about Kevin is that, no matter the situation, he turns in greatness every game," Chaska owner Joseph Fafinski said. "Kevin's performances, coupled with guys like DeMarcus (Cousins), Jrue (Holiday) and Al (Horford), are the reason this team is tied for first. We couldn't be happier with COMO's MVP so far." The POW award is Love's second straight and fourth of the season. After narrowly missing out on the October/November Player of the Month award to Minneapolis' LeBron James, Love looks like a shoo-in for POM in December. Now, his team is back in the regular season title chase. "We're not going anywhere, folks," Fafinski said. "Chaska is in it for the long haul." MINNEAPOLIS — We've hardly heard a peep from the media about the third-place Player Haterzz this season. Maybe it's karmic retribution for the team's namesake. Maybe it's just irony.
But the spotlight is now firmly on Minneapolis thanks to stud forward LeBron James (30.0 COMO points per game in 16 starts), who claimed the inaugural COMO Player of the Month award for October/November. "It's nice having the best player on the planet," owner Dan Renfro said in a written statement Monday. "Worth every penny." James, of course, has the highest salary in the league ($52 million). However, he has not claimed any of the seven COMO Player of the Week awards. In fact, if Hollywood and Chaska had not screwed up their lineups just one less time, James likely would've lost out to Chris Paul (30.13 in 15 starts) or Kevin Love (30.53 in 15 starts). "It's cute that some folks get worked up over weekly awards," Renfro said. "The Player Haterzz are in it for the long haul, and the COMO title is the only thing we worry about. It's also nice that of the two teams I think could beat us... one is five years late to greatness, and the other is run by Isaiah Thomas." Jabs at other teams aside, Renfro once again pointed fingers at the media. "We'll get the press when it matters," he said. "As the COMO league trophy is hoisted high over our championship heads." ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesnowta's Michael Carter-Williams didn't have much competition for the inaugural COMO Rookie of the Month award, but he still impressed during his first five weeks of play.
The first-year guard from Syracuse averaged 17.78 COMO points in nine starts for the Chill during October and November. The next-closest rookie was Chaska's Victor Oladipo, who only started twice in the same span. Snowta general manager Matthew Taylor felt vindicated after learning of the honor. "The media crucified me for taking a chance on MCW," Taylor said. "But I always believed in his talent." Carter-Williams developed an infection in his right knee a couple weeks ago and has not played since. Before the setback, however, he was a regular contributor to the first-place Chill (38 standings points). Taylor vowed his star rookie will be back soon. "This won't be the last COMO Rookie of the Month award that MCW will win this year," he said. "The bandwagon is full now, but you guys can run beside it if you'd like." CHASKA, Minn. — He's baaaaaaaaaack.
After snagging two straight Player of the Week awards in November, Chaska power forward Kevin Love stormed back into the MVP conversation with a 38.25 COMO average over four games. "Kevin just keeps on dominating," owner Joseph Fafinski said. The Chaska boss also had some words for Duval general manager Matthew Fairburn. "It's really a shame Fairburn has to resort to insults on the MVP of COMO when he's still losing to the Moose week after week," Fafinski said. "Instead, why don't you grab a spoon, Duval, and taste defeat?" Love's big week helped boost the Moose to a league-record 653 points — Chaska currently sits in second place on the season table. "Just another week in the season," Fafinski said. "You can expect 600-plus every week. We're not going anywhere." JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You can call Kevin Durant the king of Sunday nights.
One week after posting 60 COMO points to vault Duval into the top half of the standings, his 41 bones yesterday were enough to pull off a second straight Player of the Week award. It looked as if Shorewood's LaMarcus Aldridge (35.5 average over four games) had the hardware locked up, but Durant (36.25 over four games) came through when he needed to most. "It has been said that the Lord rests on Sunday," general manager Matthew Fairburn said. "But that's when Duval's God does his finest work." Durant is the second player in COMO history to post back-to-back POW campaigns (Chaska's Kevin Love was the first this November). No one has been able to grab three straight yet, but if Durant is red-hot. "Will he win three straight?" Fairburn asked. "Does Joey Fafinski sleep with a night light? No question." JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Kevin Durant only contributed three starts to the Bold City Brigade this week, but he made them count.
Specifically, he made his Sunday performance count with the league's largest COMO point total of the season (60 points). Playing against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Durant became the first player since Michael Jordan in 1988 to notch 30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, four blocks and four steals. Durant's big game boosted the Brigade from a likely seventh-place finish to third place in the Week 5 standings. Duval is now tied with Newport Beach for the fourth and final playoff spot. United general manager Matthew Fairburn — still salty over Chaska owner Joseph Fafinski's arithmatical comments from November — fired back late Sunday night. "Here's some simple math for you, f-ck boy Fafinski," Fairburn said. "Sixty points equals Player of the Week." |
